About

About The Safety Ledger

The Safety Ledger publishes independent reviews of paid consumer safety services. We test what we cover. We disclose every affiliate relationship clearly. We do not accept payment for placement.

What we cover

We focus on the categories of consumer safety where Americans are most likely to spend money on paid services: identity theft protection, home title monitoring, scam recovery and reimbursement, dark web monitoring, family scam protection (especially for elderly parents), and data broker removal services.

These are categories where claims are loud, advertising budgets are large, and product quality varies dramatically. Our goal is to cut through the marketing and tell readers which services are actually worth paying for, which ones are fine but overpriced, and which ones are duplicative of free protection that's already available.

How we test

For every service we review, we subscribe to the product, run it through a structured evaluation (feature audit, real-world incident simulation where possible, customer support response, policy review of insurance and reimbursement terms), and compare it against the alternatives in its category. We typically test for at least eight weeks before publishing.

We also read FTC consumer alerts, Better Business Bureau ratings, Trustpilot reviews, and active community discussions on Reddit and similar forums for each service we cover. We weigh those alongside our own testing.

How we make money

The Safety Ledger earns revenue through affiliate commissions when readers sign up for products through links on this site. Some services we review compensate us when readers convert. Others do not.

This affects our business model but does not affect our rankings. We do not accept payment for placement, and we have ranked services we earn no commission from above services we do earn commission from when our analysis supported that conclusion. Our affiliate disclosures appear at the top of every review.

Who writes for us

Our reviews are written by editorial staff with backgrounds in consumer finance, identity protection, and personal security reporting. Each reviewed product is tested by the staff member who writes the review.

What we don't do

We don't publish AI-generated content. We don't ghost-write reviews for advertisers. We don't accept gifts or sponsored trips. We don't review services we haven't tested. We don't accept payment to remove negative coverage.
